Government Honours Pledge To People Relocated From Riparian Land in Nairobi
Over 40,000 homes, totaling 181,000 people, have voluntarily relocated from riparian areas in Nairobi, including the Mathare and Ngong rivers, as part of the ongoing government evacuation effort.
Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, paid a visit to the impacted areas on Friday, 25 May 2024.
Kindiki added that the government has kept its promise to provide each household with Ksh.10,000 for alternative rental accommodation and will prioritize them in the affordable housing program.
The CS emphasized that establishing buildings and constructions within the 30-metre riparian corridor is illegal, clogs the rivers, and exposes residents of riparian reserves to serious risks of loss of life and property.
He spoke while touring current reclamation, rehabilitation, and regeneration projects on various areas of the Nairobi Rivers Corridor.
The Nairobi security personnel, commanded by Regional Commissioner Katee Mwanza, were present.
The CS stated that their existence in riparian areas constituted a serious risk, as demonstrated by last month’s flooding.
Prof. Kindiki stated that the reclaimed riparian reserves are being trenched and gated, and that tree planting for riverine ecosystems is proceeding.
The Nairobi River will be cleaned, emptied, and reconstructed, with recreational amenities open to the public.
This reclamation will improve security in adjacent towns and help eradicate problems like illegal brewing, narcotic drug trafficking, and criminal hideouts.
