Police Officer Killed By Mob After Attempting to Shoot Family In Kwale

A police officer stationed at the Ng’ombeni Patrol Base in Kwale County was killed by a group of enraged youth after attempting to use weapons to attack a family in the Ziwani area.

According to a police report obtained by AfricasNow, Police Constable Titus Gaya allegedly left his station unnoticed and went to Mwanaisha Ali’s house around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

After entering the house, the officer attempted to attack the family with bows and arrows, instilling fear and panic in Ali’s relatives who were surprised to see a stranger on their property.

Moments later, Mwanaisha sounded an alarm, alerting nearby residents, who rushed to her home and subdued the officer.

According to the report, the officer was severely attacked by the mob and died as a result of his injuries.

Other officers stationed in Kwale were alerted to the incident and rushed to the scene, discovering Gaya’s body on the floor.

Following preliminary investigations, police discovered that the deceased had recently developed mental health issues.

The incident highlights a concerning trend of mental health problems among police officers.

According to data released by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), at least 12,000 officers suffer from mental health issues, the majority of which are caused by their work environment.

To address the crisis, the NPSC initiated counselling sessions to ensure that officers received individualized attention to their needs.

As of June 2023, the NPSC reported that 25,879 officers had received counselling through these initiatives.
