HANIFA ADAN: Celebrated Activist Reveals How Ksh31.6 Million For Protest Victims Was Used
Activist and journalist Hanifa Safi Adan has published an audited report on Kenyans’ contributions to the victims of anti-Finance Bill protests.
Kenyans came together and donated Sh31,663,580 million to assist victims who were injured or died during the protests.
The younger generation organized a two-month protest across the country to demand good governance.
Hanifa led Kenyans in a fundraiser on the M-Changa platform to support those injured during the protest.
Hello guys. The D day has finally arrived. Here is the audited Mchanga report.

Two months ago, Kenyans and people of goodwill contributed a total of Ksh 31,663,580 in an Mchanga account dubbed “care for the injured” which I had created. My initial target was 10 million and I… pic.twitter.com/GQTvNYnw6g
In a statement released on Wednesday, Hanifa stated that the audit’s purpose was to confirm for all fundraiser donors how funds were spent on medical bills for the injured.
The funds were also intended to be used to assist bereaved families, seriously injured individuals, and those permanently injured.
Hanifa stated that the fundraiser was conducted with accountability and integrity, with no payments made without proper documentation.
According to her, Kenyans collected Sh31,663,580 million from 35,444 individual donors.
Hanifa stated that the fundraiser provided support to 208 individuals and families for a total of Sh30,296,574.
“The amounts received by the seriously injured, permanently injured, and bereaved were determined by the fundraiser with due consideration of available funds and anticipated medical bill expenses,” the audit report said.
According to the report, Sh10,126,963 million was used to cover the medical expenses of 95 injured people.
According to the report, 46 people were seriously injured, and Sh7,767,681 million was allocated to their care.
To support five people who were permanently injured, Sh2,081,930 million was used from the funds.
According to the report, Sh10,320,000 million was allocated to support 208 bereaved families.
According to the report, the funds helped ten hospitals across the country offset their bills. The report went on to highlight the fundraiser’s administrative costs.
It revealed that Mobi-Changa Limited charged a standard platform fee of 4.25% of funds raised to cover the costs of accepting donations, communicating with donors, and authenticating and auditing causes.
“The platform fee for this fundraiser was Sh1,345,702. Mobi-Changa Limited also charges 2.5 per cent for individual donations made through credit and debit cards,” the statement highlighted.
“The card processing fee for this fundraiser was Sh21,304, including a rebate passed on by the card processor.”
The report stated that all medical bills were paid on behalf of the injured.
For those who were seriously and permanently injured, they verified their medical bills with identifiable patients against payment receipts from hospitals and clinics.
“Through our review of discharge documents, we noted that many of the patients in the serious and permanent categories received medical bill support from the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) disaster fund, which explains their lower medical expenses,” the statement reads.
The report also stated that burial permits and post-mortem reports were validated for financial assistance to the bereaved families.
For financial assistance to the seriously injured, a signed and sealed affidavit attesting to the seriousness of the patient’s injury, a hospital bill proving admission, and the recipient’s national ID were verified prior to allocation.
For financial assistance to the permanently injured, they verified a signed and sealed affidavit attesting to the permanent nature of the patient’s injury, a hospital bill proving admission, and the recipient’s national ID.
Hanifa thanked Kenyans and those who worked directly and indirectly to make the fundraiser a success.
Regarding the protection of victims and compliance with data protection regulations, I was advised not to publish personal details of the beneficiaries. For further accountability, any certified auditor is welcome to review the records. Everything is in order, and I will provide…

She did, however, admit that she faced challenges throughout the fundraising process.
“Handling this was a test for me; I would break down in public toilets and scream under my pillow later,” she added.
“But my God, I would do it again and again if it meant taking care of our comrades.”
She also stated that she did everything in her power to ensure that no one was stranded and left behind.
Kenyans flocked to X to express their gratitude and praise for Hanifa over astounding integrity and holding onto high-level accountability with so little but with a huge impact.
