Kenya’s Senate Reduces Senator Orwoba’s Suspension

The Senate has decided to reduce the suspension of Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the Senate and Parliamentary precincts from 79 to 30 days.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot moved the motion, claiming that the decision to suspend Orwoba from the House for only 30 days was based on her demonstrated regret.

Cheruiyot believes the senator should be permitted to address the House on March 13 of this year.

This follows Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi’s message on February 12 about the implementation of the Senate’s resolution on the Report of the Committee of Powers and Privileges on Orwoba’s conduct.

The Majority Leader stated that the Nominated Senator, who began her suspension on February 12 of this year, will be allowed to return to the Senate and the precincts of Parliament on March 13 of this year under the parameters agreed upon by the Senate on September 20, 2023.

Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo seconded the move to shorten Orwoba’s suspension to 30 days.

Madzayo stated that she had apologized to the house and admitted her wrongdoing and that it was appropriate to shorten her suspension period because she had learned a lesson and would not likely repeat her mistakes.

Parliamentary Service Commission Vice Chairperson Joyce Korir urged to fellow Senators to enable Orwoba to return to the house on March 13, by reducing her suspension to one month.

West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor stated that Orwoba may learn in 30 days.

Murgor urged her to show the house that she was sorry when she returned by not repeating such a mistake and behaving with her colleagues and Senate personnel with dignity.
