CHAOS, BLACKMAIL: How Kindiki, Gachagua’s Mbeere Campaigns Are Affecting Businesses

Chaos broke out on Thursday morning at the Kanyuambora commercial center in Mbeere North, as campaigning continued to heat up in the area.

According to reports, a group of neighbors rushed into a shop in the shopping mall and stole everything in a chaotic incident caught on tape.

In a video uploaded online, scores of people wearing green campaign reflectors were seen plundering the shop before storming out and escaping.

Although there is no indication that the looting was politically motivated, some of the looters were wearing apparel supporting one of the candidates running for the constituency seat.

Both Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, are currently in Mbeere North for the last campaign rallies before the November 27 by-elections.

Kindiki spent the morning organizing a People’s Forum in Kanyuambora, which drew hundreds of Mbeere North locals to rally support for Leonard Muthede, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party candidate.

He was joined by Geoffrey Ruku, the constituency’s former MP, who had been appointed to the Cabinet, leaving a vacancy.

Gachagua, on the other hand, continued his early morning walk routine, meeting with residents of Mbeere North and Nthawa wards to campaign for Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Karish.

Muthende and Karish are the two most likely contenders to win the seat in the 2018 by-elections, with Kindiki and Gachagua appearing to be in charge of campaigning for the government-backed and United Opposition candidates, respectively.

From one-on-one meetings with residents to enormous demonstrations, this is definitely a two-horse race with strong support on both sides of the divide.

On Tuesday, Kindiki and Gachagua were observed drinking breakfast tea with locals in an apparent attempt to connect with the grassroots.
