Parliament Displays A ‘Captured’ Notion With Praise Chants To Ruto
Members of Parliament chanted during President William Ruto’s address on Thursday afternoon, forcing him to pause briefly.
The President was in the midst of delivering his constitutionally mandated State of the Union address.
As he presented his assessment and intentions for the country, some legislators began chanting “Fire! Fire! Fire!” slogans.
During his speech, the President stated that Kenya has achieved “commendable progress” in the last three years but is still functioning “below its true weight”.
Ruto urged the country to overcome what he described as a culture of “small thinking and ordinary expectations.”

Ruto stated that he was transitioning from “a vision to sell” to “a story to tell,” reflecting on Kenya’s 62-year history of “struggles, hardships, triumphs, and milestones.”
“I reflected deeply on the long road we have travelled as a nation,” he said. “From this reflection came one truth: we have made commendable progress, but Kenya is still below its true weight.”
The president advocated for a new national ethos based on ambition and boldness, saying it was time to move beyond mediocrity.
“We must cast off the prevailing mindset of being content with the average,” he told lawmakers.
“We must step beyond the comfort of the familiar and the ordinary, and reach—with courage, clarity and conviction—for nothing less than excellence and greatness.”
Ruto acknowledged the instability of the previous three years, which included political debates, compromises, and “storms that none of us invited.”
He stated that, despite the obstacles, the country had built the groundwork for economic revival.

The president stated that his administration has made “bold and sometimes difficult decisions,” such as eliminating what he called inefficient subsidies and strengthening revenue collections.
“We acted,” he said. “We limited wasteful subsidies, strengthened revenue collection, and placed our economy on the path to recovery.”
Ruto noted that inflation had “steadily declined to 4.2 per cent,” which he described as evidence that “the tough choices are working.”
Ruto, who arrived at Parliament shortly after 2pm, accompanied by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, was received by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri.
