Medics from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) stormed Eldoret Central Police Station on Tuesday to protest the death of their colleague, Richard Rotich.

The health workers marched into the station, yelling and demanding explanations from the police.

They accused the security authorities of failing to safeguard frontline personnel despite frequent indications of increased instability in the area.

The demonstrators caused a temporary disruption in station operations as cops confronted the activists.

Speaking with police officers, the medics expressed their displeasure and irritation over what they called inadequate security measures, stressing that attacks on health professionals had increased in recent weeks.

“Over the past month, there has been a sharp rise in criminal activities perpetrated by organised crime and individuals,” one of the staff officials stated.

“This has resulted in the loss of lives, serious injuries, and widespread fear among our staff. These acts are suffering, disrupting the work morale of our members.”

Protesters questioned how criminals could operate freely, including carrying illegal firearms, but law-abiding individuals remained vulnerable.

They also expressed concern over accusations that police officers failed to react to distress calls or refused to provide security escorts to employees facing threats.

“Our particular concern is this one for our league region, where our officers, your officers, were requested to accompany them to the house because there was a danger in the house, and they declined,” the official added

“So, that was a blatant refusal to provide what is necessary and what is rightful to our members.”.

The medics urged the quick arrest of those responsible for Rotich’s killing and called for greater patrols, intelligence-led operations, and visible security presence, particularly in areas where health workers dwell.

One of the protestors became upset as she described the impact of Rotich’s death on his family, saying that his widow was still in grief and their children were traumatized by the loss.

She noted that other medics were also in sorrow and asked security officers to be responsible during the mourning period, avoiding releasing suspects back into the community.

She said they could not sit back knowing that a criminal was free while their colleague lay dead.

She also noted that Rotich came from a marginalised community and had fled cattle rustling in search of safety, only to be killed by a gun in Uasin Gishu.
