Guinness World Records Ratifies Truphena Muthoni’s 72-Hour Tree-Hugging Marathon

The Guinness World Records has recognized Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree embrace as the longest marathon hugging a tree.

In a media statement issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, Guinness World Records (GWR) stated that Truphena’s goal for this record attempt was to “elevate and advocate for the protection of indigenous trees and to honor the wisdom of Indigenous peoples.”

The record-keeping agency stated that Truphena’s new 72-hour performance eclipsed her previous 48-hour mark, which she set earlier in May 2025, increasing her own record.

The Guinness World Records certification comes weeks after the Kenyan environmentalist denied online allegations that her 72-hour tree-hugging world record attempt was rejected.

Throughout this ordeal, Truphena stated that she was still in talks with the GWR concerning the official ratification of her tree-hugging marathon.

Truphena’s performance gained her great acclaim both locally and internationally, culminating in a rare State House meeting on Monday, December 15, during which the President personally recognized her accomplishment.

President Ruto announced Truphena’s appointment as an ambassador for the 15 billion tree-planting campaign, a key government effort aimed at restoring forest cover and ensuring Kenya’s environmental future.

In addition to the ambassadorial duty, Ruto stated that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) have collaborated to offer Muthoni and her team a completely subsidized holiday experience.

He acknowledged the role of environmental conservation in promoting sustainable tourism.

Before Truphena’s 48- and 72-hour tree hugs, the majority of Kenyans entering the GWR were athletes with the likes of Eliud Kipchoge, Faith Kipyegon, Kelvin Kiptum, Beatrice Chebet, Ian Wambui, and Agnes Ngetich.

Aside from athletics, Truphena was preceded by Maliha Mohammed, a Mombasa-based chef.

Malina achieved a GWR for the longest home kitchen cooking marathon by an individual in August 2023, after cooking for 90 hours and 15 minutes.
