By-Elections Dates For Emurua Dikirr, 2 Other Vacant Seats Announced

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced that by-elections will be held on May 14, 2026, to fill three vacant elective seats in different parts of the country, including Emurua Dikirr Constituency, following the death of MP Johana N’geno. 

In a special gazette notice dated March 13, the commission said the by-elections will take place in Emurua Dikirr Constituency for the position of Member of the National Assembly, and in two county assembly wards – Porro Ward and Endo Ward.

Porro Ward seat became vacant on January 5, while Endo Ward was rendered vacant on January 27, 2026. 

“Following the declaration of vacancies that occurred in the offices of Member of County Assembly for Porro Ward, Samburu West Constituency, Samburu County on 5th January, 2026, Endo Ward, Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo/Marakwet County on the 27th January, 2026 and Member of National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County on the 10th March, 2026… There shall be by-elections in the above-listed electoral areas on Thursday, the 14th May, 2026,” the gazette notice read in part. 

The commission outlined a detailed timetable that political parties and independent candidates must follow in preparation for the by-elections.

Political parties intending to participate in the by-elections should submit the names of their candidates before Wednesday, March 25.

Independent candidates wishing to contest in the by-elections must also submit their names and proposed symbols to the commission by the same date.

Candidates who intend to participate in the by-elections as independent candidates should not be members of any political party for at least three months immediately before the date of the by-elections, according to the commission.

The commission also reminded aspirants that any public officer who intends to contest in the by-elections shall resign from public office within seven days of the declaration of vacancy.

“The Commission shall publish in the Gazette, the names and symbols of persons intending to contest in the by-elections as independent candidates within seven days of receipt of the names of the candidates,” the notice read.

The commission shall nominate political parties and candidates for the by-elections on Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16.

Any dispute arising from the commission’s nomination should be lodged within 24 hours of the occurrence of the dispute.

Disputes shall be determined within ten days of the lodging of the dispute with the Commission and not later than Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Candidates of the elections shall be required to conduct their campaigns between Wednesday, April 15, and  Monday, May 11, between 7am and 6pm.

To facilitate the electoral process, the commission said the registration and revision of the voter register in the affected areas will remain suspended until June 12, 2026.
