‘This Is Unacceptable!’ – Speaker Wetangula Calls Out IG Kanja, DCI’s Amin Over Abductions

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has condemned the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, and the Director of Criminal Investigations, Amin Mohammed, for the recent wave of abductions.

Wetangula chastised the two for the National Police Service’s (NPS) denial of the continuous abductions in the country.

His words came only a day after two guys who were purportedly kidnapped by police in December of last year were discovered dead.

The Speaker, who has been silent on the topic, stated that the current condition of police disowning abductions is “unacceptable.”

Wetangula described it as retrogressive, sending the country to a dark era of massacres and forced disappearances.

On Friday, January 31, Wetangula spoke in Khwisero, Kakamega County, breaking ranks with the majority of President Willaim Ruto’s allies and criticizing top police officials.

On Thursday, the two police chiefs told a Nairobi court that they had not arrested any of the four missing Mlolongo men. They also said they did not have them in custody.

Two of the four, Justus Mutumwa and Martin Mwau, were found at the City Mortuary, raising doubts about their deaths.

“The police say they are not the ones doing it. We want them to investigate and tell Kenyans who are these criminal elements in our midst, who are unlawfully arresting people, causing their disappearance, and eventually they are found dead,” Wetangula demanded.

Wetangula, one of the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s highest-ranking members, stressed that the administration obeys and follows the law. Human rights organizations, on the other hand, believe differently.

According to a State of National Security report delivered to Parliament, there were 52 documented kidnappings between September 2023 and August 2024, a 44% increase from the 36 incidents registered the previous year.

However, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has confirmed 82 abductions since June 2024, with 29 people remaining missing as of December.

Leslie Muturi, the son of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, is among those affected. The CS has now become outspoken against the government’s handling of the abductions, calling for responsibility.

CS Muturi called out President Ruto today, amid rising calls for his resignation.

“I’m not aware of any policy that supports abductions,” Muturi said. “Abductions have been happening, and we are trying to normalise it. Surely, it cannot be business as usual.”

On Thursday, the remains of two of the four men purportedly taken from Mlolongo in Machakos County—Justus Mutumwa and Martin Mwau were found at the City Mortuary.

Mutumwa and Mwau, together with Karani Mwema and Stephen Mbisi Kavingo, disappeared on December 16 and 17, 2024. The four were allegedly kidnapped by masked men who claimed to be police officials.
