Detectives Nab Assistant Chief Who Helps Terror Suspects Get Kenyan ID

Anti-terrorism detectives arrested an assistant chief for allegedly aiding the issuing of forged identification credentials to two terror suspects.

The Assistant Chief of the Bula Power sub-location in Mandera Township was apprehended on Thursday, February 20, just days after two foreign individuals were arrested for alleged terrorist activity.

According to the DCI, the assistant chief is suspected to have helped the two foreign nationals get Kenyan identification credentials by enabling the acquisition of an acknowledgment for a waiting card.

“The assistant chief has been processed with the detectives and other security agencies working tirelessly to ensure that the residents of Mandera and all working within the town and its environs remain safe and secure and they undertake their day-to-day activities,” a statement from the DCI read.

On February 18, the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) apprehended two terror suspects after foiling their attempt to kidnap Chinese workers working on a sewer line construction site in Mandera Township.

One of the terror suspects is alleged to have entered the Kenyan border from El-Adde, Somalia.

After getting into the nation, the suspect allegedly faked Kenyan documents to impersonate a Kenyan resident. The pair is expected to face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).

Mandera has recently emerged as a hotbed of terrorism activity, owing to its proximity to Somalia, a vital base for al-Shabaab activities.

While the government has consistently increased security operations in the region to counter potential threats, terrorists appear to have developed new means to avoid authorities.

The five chiefs were on their way to Elwak for official tasks when their vehicle was stopped by the terrorist gang.

They were then blindfolded before heading to Lafey, which is notorious for terrorist activity.

The terrible tragedy occurred just one day before President William Ruto’s scheduled development tour of Mandera County.
