Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i has complimented the clergy for taking on national issues and serving as the country’s moral compass.

Speaking at a wedding ceremony in Kajiado County on Saturday, December 6, Matiang’i exhorted the clergy to preserve their position and shepherd the nation through the impending election season.

The former Cabinet Secretary singled out Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit of the Anglican Church of Kenya for taking the lead in providing a sense of direction to society.

“I want to register my full support for Bishop Ole Sapit and the leaders of the NCCK for the courageous stance you have taken regarding the leadership and governance of this nation,” Matiang’i stated.

Adding, “You are an extraordinary people, and we rely on you to maintain that stand so our nation can remain steadfast.”

He assured the clergy there of his ongoing support and expressed confidence that they would continue to guide the country on moral and national concerns.

The member of the United Opposition Coalition also endorsed his presidential ambitions.

He also pushed the Kajiado people to strengthen their newfound connection, which he claimed had evolved into a familial bond.

“Here in Kajiado, I have become part of your family. I have come to ask you to remember me when the time comes,” in a subtle reference to his presidential ambitions.

His appreciation for members of the cloth comes only days after he advised President William Ruto and other national officials to pay close attention to religious leaders’ concerns.

On November 16, Matiang’i addressed his X, emphasizing the role of the clergy in expressing ordinary Kenyans’ problems in the face of mounting economic and governance challenges.

“I saw a powerful statement from the Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the Anglican Church leaders have spoken very loudly, and many of you have spoken loudly as well,” Matiang’i noted.

“I want to ask our national leaders, His Excellency, our President, and the government, please listen to the clergy, listen to the religious leaders of our country.”

Matiangi’s remarks follow public statements from the Catholic Bishops raising concerns over governance issues.

This includes the passage of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, delays in health sector payments, and corruption, while acknowledging progress in teacher recruitment and currency stabilisation.
