KPA Announces New Prices For Likoni Ferry Services, Makes 50% Raise

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has imposed updated ferry fares affecting all users, with small automobiles now paying Ksh180 instead of Ksh120, representing a hefty 50% rise in that category.

The fee for loaded trucks and trailers will stay at Ksh7,900 each passage, despite larger reductions across other vehicle classes using the Likoni ferry route system.

Tuk-tuk operators have, however, benefited from the new structure, with prices dropping from Ksh120 to Ksh100 each crossing.

KPA emphasized that the goal is to balance affordability and operational costs.

On the other hand, handcart operators, commonly known as trolley users, will now pay Ksh75 down from Ksh100 per trip, offering some relief to informal traders relying on ferry crossings on a daily basis.

Pedestrians will continue crossing the Likoni channel free of charge as KPA maintains its commitment to ensuring safe and accessible movement for foot passengers using the ferry service system.

The changes will affect more than 450,000 passengers who now use the ferry daily, with peak days exceeding 500,000 people.

The numbers have increased from 300,000 people per day in the last five years, according to KPA data.

Meanwhile, the data reveal that vehicle crossings have dropped from over 6,000 to slightly above 4,000 on average.

This is due to the Dongo Kundu channel, which was opened in August 2024, and has drastically reduced travel time from Mombasa Island to Kwale County by over 45 minutes.

KPA maintains that the Dongo Kundu bypass does not compete with ferry services but instead complements transport options.

The port body also reveals that it has a total of six ferries, but optimally four are used during the peak time of the morning and evenings, while three are used during off-peak times.

This comes against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s development tour of the Coast.

Ruto announced plans to build two ferries, one for the Likoni ferry at the cost of Ksh3 billion, and the Mtongwe Ferry at the cost of Ksh5 billion.

President Ruto says the project will improve mobility and ease congestion for Mtongwe residents, who have long battled unreliable ferry services and dangerous alternative routes during the rainy season.
