KISUMU: Motorists Warned After MAJOR Road Bridge Collapses
Motorists have been urged to avoid the Muhoroni-Kisumu route after a bridge collapsed, making the road impassable.
The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) issued a notice on Saturday, June 27, stating that one of the bridges connecting Muhoroni and Kisumu had collapsed, impeding traffic along the important transit corridor.
The bridge reportedly fell on Saturday evening. However, there was no formal notice from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA), which is responsible for highway safety.
“One of the bridges between Muhoroni and Kisumu road has collapsed. The road is impassible,” LoDDCA stated in a statement.
The collapse of the bridge is expected to affect one of the major routes connecting Kisumu City to counties such as Kericho and Nandi.
The road also acts as a key transport and sugar-cane corridor, linking Kisumu to the sugar belt and serving the Miwani, Chemelil, and Muhoroni sugar factories.
The 60 Kilometre highway has now been rendered impassible, with motorists advised to use alternative routes.
According to the association, Motorists travelling between Kisumu and Muhoroni have been advised to use alternative routes via Kericho or Chemelil as authorities assess the extent of the damage and plan repairs.

It also urged road users to plan their journeys accordingly and comply with directions issued by traffic police and other officers managing traffic in the area.
“Please plan your journey accordingly and follow directions from traffic officers,” it added.
By the time of this publication, authorities had not issued an official statement indicating the cause of the bridge’s collapse or when the affected section of the road would be reopened.
The road has three main bridges that cross the rivers Nyando, Kibos, and Mbogo. Kenyans.co.ke cannot confirm which one of the bridges collapsed.
