NTSA Issues New Directive On Mandatory Inspections For ALL Vehicles

Mandatory vehicle inspections for all motorists will begin as early as June, according to NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa.

During an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, June 30, Kondiwa stated that the authority has changed the deployment timeline after establishing that the country lacked enough inspection centres to support statewide enforcement.

According to Kondiwa, the authority presently has only 17 inspection centres around the country and plans to increase the number to 47 by the end of 2026.

“The enforcement, the mandatory requirement, is what we are going to postpone until we have enough centres. We intend to have the centres by June 2027,” Kondiwa stated.

“We intend to have the 47 public centres by the end of this year. For the private ones, we are going to take up to a year, so that would be by June 2027,” he added.

In addition to the 47 public centres, NTSA plans to license at least 70 private centres by the end of June 2027.

Kondiwa insists that only then will the mandatory enforcement be in place because it will mean the authority has the capacity to accommodate the millions of vehicles in the country.

The NTSA boss says that compulsory enforcement will only commence once the authority has established sufficient inspection infrastructure nationwide.

The authority explained that vehicle inspection will begin on Wednesday, July 1, and only motorists who wish to have their vehicles inspected are free to do so voluntarily at existing NTSA inspection centres.

Some Vehicles Are Still Subject to Mandatory Inspections Today

However, the new timelines do not apply to all vehicles. Kondiwa clarified the vehicles that are already required by law to undergo inspection for licensing purposes.

They include commercial vehicles and public service vehicles (PSVs), which will continue to be inspected under the existing requirements.

“The mandatory enforcement by NTSA will be until June 2027, except for vehicles that require inspection for the sake of licensing, that is, commercial and PSVs,” he added.

Commercial vehicles and public service vehicles (PSVs) will therefore continue to undergo mandatory inspections under the existing regulations.

Doubts Over NTSA Rule Enforcement

NTSA has defended its controversial directive requiring annual inspections for private vehicles more than four years old.

Meanwhile, private motorists have until June 2027 before the new nationwide enforcement takes effect.

The announcement comes as a relief to many private vehicle owners who raised concerns over the enforced mandatory vehicle inspection that NTSA had announced to begin on July 1.

Among the things NTSA will inspect are brakes, headlights, and vehicle colour to ensure that the vehicle presented for inspection is the same in the authority’s registry.
