GBV: Man Slashes His Daughter During Heated Quarrel With Wife In Busia

A three-month-old newborn is admitted to Busia County Referral Hospital with a severe cut on the skull sustained following a fight between the parents.

This comes barely a week after another Busia man killed his wife during an argument that sprouted from their drinking spree.

Wilifrisha Anyango, the child’s mother, said it all began when her husband, Collins Ouma, 40, had a fight and beat her up for no reason.

During a scuffle in Nangoma on Tuesday evening, he used a slasher to cut her and the baby. Ouma runs a bar.

“He is used to beating me up whenever he has female workers in the pub,” Anyango said.

Anyango stated that it was the efforts of clubgoers that intervened to help her get out of danger and her husband detained.

“I went to call clients in the bar and requested them for assistance and upon reaching the house, they found him asleep. I took the baby before going to report the incident at the Matayos police post,” she said.

The mother of seven revealed that she has faced violence from her husband for years and hoped that things would improve.

“We have a five-year-old boy who is disabled after he was hit with a hammer by his father,” Anyango narrated.

“I have always reported to the village elders and to the police after these cases but they have never arrested him. I want the government to deal with him accordingly.”

Sammy Obuhuma, Busia County Referral Hospital’s focal person for gender-based violence, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the youngster was in stable health.

“We received a patient, a three-month-old child, with an extensive cut wound on the head which had been inflicted by a slasher that was aimed at the mother. The baby was referred here after the initial treatment at Matayos subcounty hospital,” he said.

“The child is in stable condition and we are keeping the mother and the baby here for safety because of the unpredictable situation at home.”

Obuhuma stated that the mother had scars all over her body as a result of her husband’s constant assaults.

The event occurred only two days after the government inaugurated the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence on Monday in Wote, Makueni county.

This year’s topic is “Towards 30 Years of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: Uniting to End Violence Against Girls and Women.”

According to UN Women, every 10 minutes in 2023, a woman would be purposefully slain by partners or relatives.
