‘I Wanted To Die’ – Boniface Mwangi Reveals How Abductions, Deaths From Protests Pushed To Suicide Resolve

Activist Boniface Mwangi has described how he considered suicide after witnessing violence against peaceful demonstrators during the nation’s anti-government protests.

In a 2,400-word post on his social media account, Mwangi described how the protests’ abductions and deaths took a toll on him, pushing him to the brink of suicide.

“On August 3, 2024, I found myself in a very dark place and considered taking my own life. A few days earlier, l had signed my will, then rang or texted a few people. It was my farewell,” Read part of Mwangi’s post.

“I wanted to die. Exit this world for good. There was simply too much pain, grief, and trauma in my life that I couldnโ€™t bear it any longer.”

The activist traced his story back to August 3, 2024, when he found himself in a dark place and had already signed his will due to the stigma the protests had placed on his family.

According to the journalist, his family assisted him in recovering by seeking professional help and realigning his goals, which included seeking better governance.

“Although I wanted to commit suicide, my family and friends threw a ring of love and empathy around me that made me reconsider,” he stated.

“They forced me to seek professional help and to take a health break to focus on my mental wellness. That helped to re-center me.”

Mwangi defied the government’s intimidation tactics, citing numerous arrests and abduction attempts during the wave of protests.

He continued to accuse President William Ruto’s government of failing to deliver on its promises, urging Kenyans to band together to remove the broad-based government from office.
