Governor Sacks 1500 County Workers After Extensive Crackdown

Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang has confirmed the dismissal of over 1500 county employees following a crackdown on illegally hired personnel in his county.

Speaking to the media on September 21, Sang stated that anyone involved in the hiring process would face the full weight of the law.

The governor insisted that no one is above the law, saying that it makes no difference whether they are the governor’s relatives, the deputy governor, county public service board members, CECs, or county officers; they will all face the consequences.

He went on to urge the county public service board to take over the investigation starting next week and ensure that it is completed within the next month or two.

“Within the next month or two, we should be able to be done with that process so that then we have staff that are legally and procedurally recruited,” he noted.

“We also have staff whose credentials and qualifications are clear and ascertained.”

Sang added that the process will also ensure that employees are hired in the appropriate job groups based on their qualifications and years of experience.

The governor warned the individuals not to interfere with the process.

“Any individual who will attempt to disrupt the functioning and the operations of the County Government of Nandi will be dealt with as any criminals or offenders of the law,” the governor said.

This warning, he stated, applied to operations in the revenue collection sector, health facilities, and all other county offices.

He then urged anyone who believes they have been unfairly terminated to file their claims in accordance with the proper procedure.

“If you have an issue, the options are clear, the letters of termination or revocation were given to them. It gives them 14 days for you to raise the matter with the Public Service Commission,” he clarified.

This follows an intense social media controversy in which several Kenyans accused the governor of nepotism in hiring the county staff.

The situation is similar to the firing of 600 casual workers in Trans Nzoia County on September 19 due to word of mouth, as counties scramble to eliminate misconduct in devolved units.
