Jonnie Musau, a 14-seater matatu driver, had a life-changing moment when a woman went into labour inside the Public Service Vehicle (PSV).

Musau, who has since received widespread praise from Kenyans on the internet for his heroic actions, was forced to assist an expectant mother in giving birth and then transporting her to the hospital on Monday, September 23.

Prior to the incident, the driver, who plies the Mombasa Road route, picked up the expectant woman, who was trekking to a distant medical facility where she was expected to give birth.

Musau, who was ferrying passengers near the Samala area in Makueni County at the time, was moved by the woman’s plight and decided to give her a ride for free.

The mother went into labour while on the journey. Musau was forced to pull over and assist the woman in giving birth despite the fact that the healthcare facility was still a long distance away.

The driver, assisted by the tout, quickly took command of the situation and assisted the mother in carrying her baby before transporting her to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for specialized care.

Musau’s act of love caught the attention of many Kenyans, who have since praised him and his colleague for their bravery and acts of kindness.

“May you be blessed, Jonnie. Keep doing a good job. This is kindness, may the goodness of God follow you,” exclaimed an online user.

Kenyans also expressed their gratitude by donating money and gifts to the duo. Kenyans purchased two pairs of shoes as gifts for the two.

Such acts of kindness are sometimes overlooked, but Jonnie’s brave move earned him a lifetime fortune.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, Kenya’s maternal mortality ratio, defined as the number of women dying from pregnancy-related causes, is 355 deaths per 100,000 live births.

While access to proper healthcare for pregnant women has improved from 62% to 70%, the majority of pregnancy-related deaths are the result of a lack of access to proper health facilities.
