This decision, announced in a gazette notice on Friday, September 27, 2024, positions Temmerman to lead improvements at one of Kenya’s largest public hospitals. Her tenure will last three years, ending on September 20, 2027.
Temmerman, an acclaimed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aga Khan University in Nairobi, has had a distinguished career marked by leadership roles in reproductive health.
Her previous experience includes serving as Director of the World Health Organization’s Department of Reproductive Health and Research, where she oversaw critical initiatives to improve global health outcomes.
Her credentials are further strengthened by her appointment as the UNESCO Chair on Youth Leadership in Science, Health, Gender, and Education, which demonstrates her dedication to advancing health education.
Under her leadership, Coast General Hospital, which has 700 beds, will be tasked with addressing a slew of issues highlighted in a US Agency for International Development report.

These issues include poor service quality and long wait times, which have hampered patient care.
Temmerman’s knowledge will be invaluable in transforming these critical areas to improve patient experiences and operational efficiency.
The appointment also reflects Governor Nassir’s broader strategy to revitalize Mombasa’s healthcare services.
Along with Temmerman, former deputy governor candidate Selina Maitha has been appointed to the Board of Mombasa Water and Sewerage Company (MOWASCO) for three years.
Maitha previously ran for deputy governor in the 2022 elections, demonstrating a concerted effort to place experienced people in key leadership positions.
Temmerman’s impressive background, which includes over 500 publications on women’s health, gives her the ability to navigate the complexities of healthcare governance.
Her connections to international health networks, as well as her extensive policy advocacy experience, are likely to have an impact on the hospital’s direction and services.

The decision to appoint such a prominent international figure to a local board demonstrates Mombasa’s desire to improve its health standards.
It remains to be seen how quickly these changes will take effect, but the local community will closely monitor the impact of these strategic appointments.
