2 Insurance Officials Arrested Over Sh40M Gov’t Medical Tender

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested two insurance company officials in connection with an alleged Sh40 million medical tender at a government agency.

Following a court order, the anti-graft authority conducted a search of the insurance business’s offices, during which two top company officials were arrested.

EACC believes the two have critical information that could aid the ongoing investigation into the tender.

According to Court Orders issued by the Mombasa Chief Magistrates Court, one of the officers was arrested following a search of his Nairobi apartment.

He was later led to the EACC Integrity Centre offices for processing, while the second officer was arrested in Mombasa and processed at the EACC Mombasa offices.

According to the anti-graft agency, early investigations revealed that the tender was awarded in violation of procurement procedures.

On Sunday, EACC spokesman Eric Ngumbi confirmed the raid and arrest, stating that the operation generated vital evidence that will help the ongoing investigation.

The two were arrested after a top official at the State agency under investigation was arrested on the same charges.

The officer was arrested as part of an operation that also targeted two insurance brokers suspected of being involved in the insurance debacle.

According to EACC, the officer was detained in Naivasha, where he had been training, and was escorted to the EACC Integrity Centre offices in Nairobi.

Following the search of their individual residential premises and homes, the three were escorted to EACC headquarters in Nairobi and Mombasa for interviews and recorded statements.

They were later released pending the conclusion of the investigation.

EACC stated that the operation, which was carried out in accordance with court orders, produced vital evidence that will benefit ongoing investigations.

EACC has increased its focus on the purchase of staff medical insurance coverage in public institutions, which some officials are now utilizing as a conduit to mismanage taxpayer dollars.

“The outcome of the ongoing investigation will inform the next course of action, which may include prosecution and recovery of any public funds fraudulently paid from public coffers,” Ngumbi said.
