The driver of the renegade matatu caught on film swerving wildly has been fined heavily, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.
In a statement, the NTSA stated that three other individuals, including the matatu owner, were charged and fined after the video footage went viral.
In an update issued on Friday, the NTSA detailed the sanctions handed on to all parties involved, with the driver of the infectious matatu receiving the most severe penalty.

According to the NTSA, the driver, who was detained at the Makuyu Police Station, was fined Ksh120,000 and had his driver’s license suspended for at least a year.
The owner of the matatu was also fined Ksh20,000, while the conductor was fined Ksh12,000.
On December 23, the Authority was made aware of a terrifying video of two PSVs veering randomly from left to right in what looked to be a rising lane.
In the footage, one of the PSVs appeared to be overloaded, with numerous passengers hanging from the windows while the vehicle rapidly crossed lanes as if the driver was performing a trick.

The NTSA took notice of the December 23 video and announced hours later that the owners of the vehicles had been summoned.
Unfortunately, the NTSA on Friday confirmed that the driver of the other matatu implicated in the same unscrupulous actions had not surrendered to the authorities.
The NTSA has been on high alert, particularly over the festive season, in an effort to reduce road accidents by cracking down on driver misconduct on congested roadways.

One of the initiatives taken by the NTSA before Christmas was to encourage motorists to schedule inspections ahead of time and to get their vehicles inspected before traveling.
This instruction was issued after it was discovered that some drivers were submitting motor vehicle inspection booking slips at NTSA checkpoints rather than the requisite inspection reports.
Despite the NTSA’s best efforts, some mishaps have been reported during the holiday season.
One of the most recent cases included a collision between two lorries traveling in opposing directions, injuring nearly 40 persons, including pedestrians.
