British Woman Stuck In Kenya With Ksh13 Million Hospital Bill

A woman’s family from England in the United Kingdom is considering their next moves after she became unwell while on holiday in Kenya, costing the family £80,000 (Ksh13 million) in hospital bills.

This comes after the woman experienced liver failure while on a family vacation in Mombasa.

Typically, the family would have used their travel insurance, which is required for persons visiting foreign nations.

However, the lady forgot to declare the pre-existing ailment when filling out insurance documents, resulting in the insurance not covering the bill.

Lee Flint and her husband Jack Flint flew to Kenya on September 16 to continue their longstanding humanitarian work there as well as to celebrate Jack’s cancer-free diagnosis.

However, a few weeks after landing in the East African country, the 77-year-old Lee was discovered unconscious in her bed and transported to an Intensive Care Unit at a Mombasa hospital.

Doctors informed Jack that Lee had suffered grade four kidney and liver failure, her organs were closing down, and she was still in serious condition with internal bleeding and blood poisoning.

Following the investigation, it was discovered that Lee had undergone a blood test and scan months prior to the trip due to a minor condition.

However, she kept it to herself since she did not want to upset her husband, who had been receiving chemotherapy for his cancer treatment.

While speaking with National World, a British multimedia firm, Lee’s son Jamie described the family’s plight, which led to his father creating a GoFundMe campaign to seek funds to help fly Lee home and cover the hospital bill.

“After my dad had finished his chemotherapy and my mum was his main carer which took a lot out of her, they inevitably made a mistake on the insurance form,” Jamie stated.

“A few months before that my mum had been to the doctor’s for some blood tests. My mum didn’t want to stress my dad out, she kept it to herself.”

“But in the meantime, she was becoming poorly and we didn’t realise. My dad was filling out the insurance form on his laptop and made a mistake and that’s why it’s invalid,” he added.

“It’s a living nightmare really. One day she was not responsive in her bed and they had no idea what happened. She has kidney and liver failure so her organs are shutting down,” Jamie noted.

“I know she’s got an internal bleed. She had blood poisoning and that’s what was causing her to fall in and out of consciousness. I was heartbroken and felt completely helpless.

“I told my dad I have to come out there. He told me to sit tight at home. I kept myself busy by ripping their bathroom out, so I was going to put in a disabled shower,” Jamie lamented.

“That’s when I thought they were coming home, but Mum has got worse and worse. I feel completely helpless, just because I am stuck in England.”

The family said they were unsure whether Lee was aware of her test findings because she was unable to talk.

The pair had been conducting charitable work in Watamu, Kenya, for over 30 years, spending months there at a time.

This time, they brought 62 kilograms of clothing and reading glasses to donate to schools and orphanages.
