‘Paint Your Houses, We Will Repair Roads!’ – Governor Sakaja Orders Nairobi CBD Landlords
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has demanded that all buildings in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) be repainted within the next three months.
Sakaja attended a church service at the Church of Christ in Africa in Kariobangi South on Sunday, where he announced plans to make the directive public on Monday.
“Everyone with buildings in the CBD, we will release a circular tomorrow. All those buildings must be painted in 90 days,” the governor said.
Sakaja indicated that the projects underway in Nairobi were part of a larger collaboration between the county and the national government, with the primary goal of rehabilitating infrastructure such as highways.
He added: “As you embark on the painting of buildings we will also be working as the county government to repair roads. We have received the financial support and I would personally like to thank the President.”
Landlords in Nairobi CBD will soon be required to repaint their buildings and add security lighting as part of a new city facelift plan, with an official notice set to be issued this week.

Sakaja’s remark followed Nairobi City County Assembly Health Committee Chairperson Maurice Ochieng’s demand on the county administration to ensure all buildings are repainted.
Mr Ochieng pointed out that the majority of buildings in the CBD were decaying on the outside, creating a health risk to city residents.
According to Ochieng, the unclean and unpresentable status of most CBD buildings violates Section 118b of the Public Health Act Cap 242.
“The law on public nuisances under Section 118b of Public Health Act Cap 242 is clear and compliance is therefore irreversible,” he said.
“We want to caution the building owners against ignoring these provisions on public health.”

Sakaja’s county government has been pushing for a massive clean-up and rebuilding of Nairobi, notably the Central Business District.
In an effort to alleviate overcrowding on CBD streets, the county administration prohibited hawking along city pathways.
Hawkers were also told not to conduct business on important streets and roads, which the county government believes are for pedestrians only.
Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria recently spearheaded attempts to remove business signs from the Nairobi Central Business District.
