NCIC Summons 2 MPs Over Tribal Remarks Made A Week Ago

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned the Webuye West Member of Parliament (MP) Dan Wanyama for inciting remarks made about the Mountain area a week ago.

In a notification dated January 27, the commission directed the MP to appear at their headquarters on Wednesday, January 29, at 10 a.m. to help in the investigation of the case.

Wanyama made discriminating statements at an Interdenominational Prayer gathering on Sunday, January 19, at Cheptais Boys’ High School in Bungoma County, which could jeopardize peaceful community interaction.

“The Mountain is already slippery and will remain slippery forever. If we all come together we can isolate them. It will be us against them. I have no fear in saying that,” MP Wanyama said in his address.

According to the NCIC, these words generate feelings of scorn, anger, animosity, violence, or discrimination and disrupt harmonious coexistence between camps of different political affiliations in Kenya.

His words sparked outrage among Mount Kenya leaders and other Kenyans, especially given the current climate of national unity.

This summons comes just a few days after the NCIC expressed concern over the large number of politicians who have resorted to making nasty statements at public demonstrations.

At a press conference on January 23, the commission asked for the criminal summons of at least ten MPs.

The NCIC Vice Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu, announced that they had completed investigations into the accused parliamentarians.

The leaders include Oscar Sudi, Farah Maalim, and Dan Wanyama, and had transferred their files to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for arrest.

“We have more than 10 politicians who have been using language that can incite Kenyans,” Nyutu stated.

“We have even completed our investigations and forwarded the files to DCI and if the DCI does take the next step which is to arrest and charge these criminals and the DPP takes them to court and there is prosecution, we will have made progress.”

MP Maalim was kicked out of the Wiper Democratic Movement and deprived of his position as Deputy Party Leader due to his comments about the Gen Z protests and abductions.

Sudi of Kapseret has yet to face any consequences for his derogatory public comments.

The Commission has also summoned Starehe MP Amos Maina for remarks he made during a church service in Laikipia.
