REPORT: Kenya Records 3,211 Cervical Cancer Deaths Annually
According to Public Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni, 9 women die from cervical cancer every day in Kenya.
Speaking on Thursday, January 30, 2025, the PS stated that cervical cancer had become the biggest cause of cancer mortality in women.
She also said that the lethal disease has become the second most common cancer worldwide.

The PS specifically noted that Kenya records 5,226 new cases and 3,211 fatalities from cervical cancer each year.
“This country records about 5,226 new cases and 3,211 deaths for cervical cancer annually. Cervical cancer in particular is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women and second most prevalent cancer overall,” she said.
The PS also stated that the ministry intends to ensure that 90 percent of young girls aged 14 and under are vaccinated.

She emphasized the importance of the activity, stating that it will help reduce cases in the country.

While advocating for the activity, the PS shared how she lost a close family member owing to late screening and vaccination.
“Mimi mwenyewe dada yangu nimemzika last year sababu ya cancer, take ilijulikana Kama Niko stage 4, hatunge reverse, ingenue hapo mwaka wa 2018 akue screened ingepatikana labda iko stage 1, mambo ya screening na vaccination na treatment tunaiweka kwanza basket moja,” she added.
