‘How Did We Become So Morally Bankrupt?’ – Ezekiel Mutua Shocked As Kenyans Chant ‘Wacha Akufe’

Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), has encouraged Kenyans to avoid speaking ill of the dead.

Mutua took to his official X account on Saturday, February 22, 2025, to declare that a segment of Kenyans has become morally bankrupt to the extent of wishing the dead death even after they have died.

Mutua cited an incident in which Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa was interrupted during an event in Trans Nzoia.

Wamalwa was expressing his condolences following the death of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

The former Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) chief claims he was disappointed to see some Kenyans at the ceremony chanting “wacha akufe tu” when he announced that Kenya had lost the former IEBC chief.

“How did we become so morally bankrupt to the point of speaking ill of the dead, to hate people to the point of wishing them death even when they are dead?” Mutua posed.

“I came across the unfortunate comments at the function attended by former CS Eugene Wamalwa, who was interrupted with chants of “Wacha akufe tu” when he mentioned that we had lost former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati. Have we lost our humanity? How shall we ever regain it as a country?”

Kenyans have had conflicting emotions to Chebukati’s death. While Kenyans and political leaders have grieved him as a leader who valued integrity, other Kenyans have spoken unprintable things about Chebukati.

Chebukati died on Friday, February 21, 2025, at a Nairobi hospital, according to his relatives.

Chebukati, who managed Kenya’s 2017 and 2022 general elections, died in circumstances that have not been officially acknowledged.
