Moi University has ordered all of its employees to return to work immediately, despite not having paid them their February pay.

The issue of delayed wages has been a serious difficulty for the university, limiting instructional services.

On Thursday, February 13, the institution’s lecturers issued a notification indicating that they would go on strike over delayed salaries.

In a letter signed by Dr Busolo Wegesa, the Chapter Secretary of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at Moi University, lecturers threatened not to report to work on February 13 unless their salaries were received.

In an internal message to employees, the university recognized the delay in February wage payments but encouraged them to continue working as the university worked to guarantee the payments were completed.

“We are all aware of the financial challenges facing the University that have led to a delay in payment of the February 2025 salary,” read the statement in part.

“Efforts are being made by the University Management and Council to resolve the issues responsible for the delay.”

The institution is requesting that personnel resume their responsibilities in order to ensure that the upcoming examinations take place as planned.

In the announcement, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kiplagat Kotut, recommended that all Department Chairs guarantee that the planned examinations are administered on time.

Several employees had reported that due to delayed paychecks, they were unable to fund their transportation to the numerous examination venues.

However, the university announced that it would provide buses for personnel to utilize.

“Following the concern raised by some members of staff about their lack of funds to cover transport to the workplace, a university bus will be available on Monday, 17 March, at 7 am at the College of Health Sciences to transport the affected staff to the Main Campus. Preference will be given to staff who are scheduled to invigilate examinations,” Kotut revealed.

The acting vice chancellor commended the workers for their continuing support, commitment, and patience as the institution worked to remedy the delayed salary issue.
