‘They Are Fraudsters!’ – CS Duale Tells Kenyans Of SHA Critics

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale has urged more Kenyans to sign up for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Duale stated that the new healthcare scheme will provide inexpensive healthcare to all Kenyans, as opposed to the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), which only benefited employees.

On Sunday, he spoke at a fundraising event for the Harhosa Mixed Day Secondary School in Marsabit County.

The CS also stated that enrolment has been hampered by detractors who he claims are earning illegal financial gains from the defunct NHIF.

“Those opposing SHA are fraudsters. We have discovered that there are some private hospitals which are saying they are in Moyale,” he said.

“However, when doctors are dispatched, they are no longer there. They are opposing it because they were receiving free money.”

As a result, he advised inhabitants of the North-Eastern region to participate in the healthcare initiative in order to gain access to quality care.

“I have seen Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo and Tana Rive still have low enrolment numbers. We will come with teams from SHA so that we register more people,” Duale noted.

This comes just a week after Duale raised concerns about some healthcare facilities making bogus claims.

He warned that institutions found liable for invoicing for non-existent services will risk blacklisting.

CS Duale, appearing before the Senate Committee on Health, said that investigations against doctors allegedly participating in the fraud have already begun.

He also acknowledged operational issues inside the system, blaming some health personnel and organizations for undermining the program.

“The system may be facing challenges,” said Duale, “but part of the problem lies with dishonest health practitioners who are making false claims.”

SHA, which was established to improve access to inexpensive healthcare, has faced numerous obstacles since its start.

Many Kenyans have expressed reservations about its implementation, and suspicions of fraud cast more doubt on the program’s credibility.

Leaders continue to urge Kenyans to register for SHA as the country faces major healthcare concerns.

These include staffing shortages, funding difficulties, and rising demand for quality services under the SHA framework.
