CHAOS: Police Fire Gunshots, Tear Gas At Mt Kenya Politician’s Event
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza faced a setback for the second week in a row when her scheduled charity event was called off by police officers.
Mwangaza, who planned an event called Operation Okolea, was forced to leave after police used tear gas to disperse her followers in Kiguchwa, Meru County.
Authorities, who appeared to anticipate the occurrence, were on the scene to disperse the gathering before it grew too large.

The sounds of firearms being discharged, as well as the explosion of teargas canisters, increased terror among spectators.
Speaking earlier at a church service before the event, the outspoken former governor appeared to predict conflict.
“Can you imagine your bishop being sent over 2,000 officers in the field?” she posed to the congregation.
“Those who will be left inside the church should be left praying, while those who will be able to attend, even if we get barred, will come back and thank God.”
While no one was killed in the commotion, one person thought to be a driver for Mwangaza’s entourage suffered critical head injuries as a result of the incident.
Mwangaza, who has previously met opposition from authorities for her planned events, accused the police of allowing themselves to be used by the government.

During her church message, the former governor, who was impeached, spoke of intimidation.
She claimed that over 2000 cops had been deployed in what she believes was a coordinated effort to sabotage her outreach activities.
The episode matched another on May 11, when the former governor attempted to question officials about why they were preventing her event from taking place.

Before the altercation got wild, Mwangaza had the support of a sizable crowd, who also chastised police officers.
Interestingly, despite screams of “mama, mama” from Mwangaza’s supporters, the former governor sought to stop one cop from hurling a canister, questioning why force was being used against a relatively calm gathering.
Since her impeachment, the ex-governor has been laying the framework for her new political party, which will be officially launched soon.
Mwangaza does not want to run as a presidential candidate, but she did say that the party, which would have its roots in Meru, will be created in partnership with leaders from other regions.
