Raila Issues Demands To Ruto For Victims Of 2024 Finance Bill Protests
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement party, has renewed calls for compensation for families who lost loved ones during last year’s anti-government rallies.
Speaking at the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations in Homabay, Odinga urged President William Ruto to guarantee that the victims receive timely compensation.
Odinga emphasized that, while the Head of State’s apologies were a wonderful gesture, they were only the first stage in the lengthy process of reconciliation.
In his 6-minute statement, the experienced opposition leader argued that the measure will help the country close a chapter on the events that occurred last year.
Raila recently joined forces with Ruto’s camp following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ODM and UDA.
“During the prayer breakfast, there were apologies from you and the Speaker,” Odinga stated.

“But then there are issues of people who were injured should be compensated. This will help their families so that we can close the chapter. We want Kenyans to live in peace.”

The developments follow President Ruto’s words at the National Prayer Breakfast in Nairobi last Wednesday, when he apologized on behalf of Kenyans to both Tanzania and Generation Z.
His gesture came in response to a request from American preacher Rickey Allen Bolden, who urged political leaders to embrace unity.
At the same time, Odinga, the president’s former adversary turned ally, urged Ruto not to reinstate the provincial government system of administration, claiming that doing so would be a reversal of the advances earned through devolution.
Further, Odinga appealed to Parliament to address the revenue allocation standoff between the national government and the county governments to protect devolution.
