Goons Disrupt Doctors’ Strike In As Police Watch
A press briefing by striking physicians at Msambweni County Referral Hospital in Kwale County became chaotic after a bunch of unidentified goons disrupted the assembly while police stood by helplessly.
The doctors, who had gathered to voice their concerns about delayed salaries and terrible working conditions, were forced to run as goons armed with clubs and riding motorcycles rushed the premises.
The doctors from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) described the occurrence as an unusual act of intimidation.
“We were just standing outside the hospital when they came at us. We had done nothing provocative. This is the first time we’ve seen such hostility directed at doctors,” said one of the union officials.
According to the doctors, the goons shut the hospital gates, preventing the doctors from entering, while police, whom the doctors expected to assist, appeared to simply watch.
“At this point, we also noticed a heavy police presence, watching while we were attacked,” another doctor decried.
“So we are really trying to beseech because we have important issues regarding Kwale doctors that we want to be addressed, and it is not in good faith when something like this happens.”

The doctors accused the county of disregarding their doctors and patients, so undervaluing them.
“We would like to categorically condemn what we have seen today in the Msambweni County Referral Hospital,” the distressed doctors cried out.
“We have been chased away by goons. We have never, and I can categorically say this, KMPDU has never seen such a kind of act.”
The doctors had convened to address the media about their ongoing strike, which began on June 29.
According to a previous strike notification issued by KMPDU, the county administration has failed to pay salaries and allowances on schedule.

They also denied doctors their due promotions and refused to offer study leave to those wishing to improve their qualifications.
Dr. Davji Atellah, Secretary General of the KMPDU, had warned that until the concerns were handled, doctors in Kwale County would withdraw their services.
The deployment of thugs to undermine the constitutional right to picket has increased recently.
Barely a week ago, goons disrupted the June 25 commemorative protests, destroying properties and leaving business owners counting losses.
