‘This is What We Received!’ – Albert Ojwang’s Family Reveals Total Donation Amount

Contrary to popular belief, the family lawyer for late teacher Albert Ojwang has revealed that the family never received Ksh10 million from any single person.

Julius Juma, Ojwang’s family lawyer, spoke at Ridgeways Baptist Church on Thursday, July 2, during the late blogger’s requiem liturgy, when he addressed the millions received by the family in the aftermath of his death.

“It has been said or shared on various media channels that Mzee received KSh10 million,” he said. “I have been asked to set the record straight, and I am doing so on the pulpit.”

According to the family lawyer, the family received around Ksh5.1 million in total monetary help.

This includes funds received from President William Ruto and ODM Party leader Raila Odinga.

The lawyer went on, “The family wishes to confirm that they received Ksh2 million from the Head of State, Ksh1 million from Honourable Raila Odinga and Ksh2 million from Kenyans who gave in the form of Ksh1, Ksh10, and Ksh100 shillings, totalling Ksh5,060,000.”

Ojwang died in dubious circumstances on June 8, causing public indignation and protests in the following weeks.

The blogger’s family has also faced social media backlash, especially after it was revealed that Ojwang’s father received a personal phone call from the president.

On June 24, Ojwang’s family representative refuted claims that the family obtained Ksh10 million only from Kenyan donations.

He clarified that the public had misread comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi’s statement.

According to the spokesperson, Eric Omondi simply provided projections of how much could be obtained based on the momentum produced by the initial Ksh2 million offer.

Meanwhile, Ojwang will be laid to rest on July 4 at his father’s house in Kakwonyo Village, Homa Bay County.

In the inquiry into Ojwang’s death, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has accepted murder charges against Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam, Police Constables James Mukhwana and Peter Kimani, and three others.

Last Monday, OCS Talaam and the other defendants asked High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi to postpone their murder trial, but he rejected them.

Instead, the judge granted the DPP’s and the IPOA’s plea to move the case to Kibera’s High Court.

Talaam and Police Constable James Mukhwana’s murder trial is already underway in the same Court.
