Senator Onyonka Responds To Claims Of Matiang’i Being In Talks With Gov’t
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has denied allegations that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is secretly negotiating with the Kenya Kwanza government.
On his official X page, the senator described the reports as bogus, deceptive, and politically motivated.
“There is NO negotiation going on between Dr Fred Matiang’i and anyone in government. The person purporting to speak for Dr. Matiang’i is an impostor,” the statement read in part.
The denial comes amid mounting speculation that Matiang’i, a key participant in the previous administration, is looking for a political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The senator emphasized that Matiangi’s decision to support the opposition was deliberate, and warned politicians against misrepresenting their primary purpose.
According to the senator, the rumors are part of a malicious plot to tarnish Matiang’i and cause uncertainty among his supporters.
The senator targeted Kisii Governor Simba Arati, accusing him of eroding opposition unity through irresponsible public attacks on key figures.
“Simba Arati’s reckless attacks on the former DP and other opposition figures do not represent the will of the Abagusii,” Onyonka said.
“If we are serious about Matiang’i’s presidential prospects, we must protect his name from such careless political sabotage.”
Onyonka responded to Governor Arati’s recent criticism of opposition leaders, with whom Matiang’i has been closely working since announcing his candidacy for president in 2027.

Matiang’i, who has kept a quiet profile since his time as Interior Secretary, recently stated in an interview with Citizen TV that he is consulting with numerous political groups.
However, he made no mention of any involvement with the Kenya Kwanza government, which bolstered Onyonka’s denial.
“I am in consultations with several political parties and several political leaders across the board,” Matiang’i said on Tuesday.
“I honestly think that if I made a choice now and stuck to one political party, I would disadvantage the others with whom we are having a discussion.”
