Gov’t Announces New University Fees After Public Outcry

The government has announced considerable reductions in university fees for all academic programs at public universities.

The new regulation, which takes effect on September 1, 2025, affects both first-year and continuing students.

The decision comes after months of talks with the general public, students, and higher education stakeholders.

The decision also represents a significant shift in the new Student-Centred Funding Model, which aims to make university education more affordable and accessible while ensuring institutional sustainability.

“This bold step reaffirms our commitment to ensuring affordable, accessible, and quality university education,” said Higher Education Principal Secretary, Beatrice Inyangala, in a letter to Vice Chancellors and Principals of Constituent Colleges.

She also stated that the reforms directly address concerns made by students and their families about the rising cost of school.

Public institutions must immediately alter their applications and financial portals to reflect the new pricing system.

The government stated that the expense of education will continue to be covered by a combination of tuition fees, scholarships, and student loans, depending on individual need.

The Ministry of Education also urged universities to execute the new financing reforms efficiently and fairly.

“We count on your full cooperation to implement these financing reforms efficiently, equitably, and in the best interest of Kenyan students and families.”

The administration also restated its commitment to positioning higher education as a vital driver of national development, describing the measures as a watershed moment in the education sector.

With the new policy in effect, thousands more students are likely to benefit from lower financial burdens, making it easier for more Kenyans to pursue higher education.
