‘We Will Surveil You!’ Murkomen Warns Former Military Officers

Kipchumba Murkomen, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, has threatened to surveil all retired and former members of Kenya’s disciplined forces.

This comprises the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and the National Police Service, which are all involved in irregular operations.

Murkomen addressed concerns raised by a viral post featuring former KDF officer and US Army veteran Patrick Osoi dressed in paramilitary garb and calling for action against police abuse and poor governance.

On Thursday, the Chief of Staff spoke during the 23rd edition of the Jukwaa la Usalama tour in Laikipia County.

Murkomen denounced the act, noting that such behavior by former security officers will not be permitted, considering their advanced training and potential for disruption if misused.

“All police, military, and intelligence personnel who are out of service should know that we will not entertain such actions and will place them under strict surveillance,” Murkomen declared.

He emphasized that any former officers who engage in such political activities while misusing their training will be considered subversive to the state.

“I am glad that the DCI has already acted. We are aware that they are trying to establish a military wing to support their political objectives, and we will not permit that,” he added.

Murkomen voiced concern that current freedoms, particularly freedom of expression, were being abused by bad actors, warning that such abuse posed a severe threat to national stability.

“Officers, whether in service or retired, must understand that this country will not accommodate such tendencies,” he said.

“We are seeing the opposition, LSK, and other civil society groups defending these acts, but the law must take its course.”

He also encouraged the judiciary and prosecution agencies to charge Osoi and his associate, Shakur, with the most serious crimes under the Penal Code in order to set a precedent for others.

The Interior CS underlined that, while the administration respects rights and freedoms, those with military or police histories will not be allowed to exploit their former professions for political or militant purposes.

The developments follow a raid on Osoi’s residence by a squad of detectives on Tuesday.

They arrested him for allegedly attempting to rally ex-security personnel into an anti-government political movement.

Osoi, who drew notice for founding the Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI) group on Tuesday, was apprehended by highly armed officers in what his communications team described as a “abduction.”

Previously, the former Special Forces man wrote a statement clarifying the movement’s objective.

He added that the goal was to defend victims of extrajudicial executions and to help officers who had been demoted for refusing to follow illegal orders.
