SOUTH AFRICA: White Farmer On Trial For Killing Women, Feeding Them To Pigs

A white South African farmer and two of his employees are on trial for the killings of two black women, who were shot and fed to pigs.

Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 34, were killed last year while purportedly seeking food on a farm near Polokwane in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province.

Their bodies were subsequently said to have been put to pigs in an apparent attempt to dispose of the evidence.

Farm owner Zachariah Johannes Olivier, 60, and his employees Adrian de Wet, 19, and William Musora, 50, have yet to enter a plea and remain in custody.

The case has aroused uproar across South Africa, escalating racial tensions in the country.

Despite the fact that apartheid’s discriminatory system was abolished over 30 years ago, such tensions remain prevalent in rural regions.

The white minority owns the majority of private farms, while most farm workers are black and low-wage.

This has created discontent among the black community, while many white farmers complain about rising crime rates.

The three guys are also charged with attempted murder for shooting at Ms. Ndlovu’s spouse.

Mr Musora, a Zimbabwean national, faces a further charge under South Africa’s Immigration Act for being an unlawful immigrant.

As the trial began, the Limpopo High Court was filled with friends and families of the victims.

Members of the opposition group Economic Freedom Fighters, which had previously urged for the farm’s closure, were also present in court.
