The government has offered to cover the entire cost of the funeral service for the victims of the recent bus tragedy in Kisumu, which killed at least 26 people.

According to Vincent Kodera, chairperson of the burial committee, the government would cover the costs of the program, which include mortuary bills, coffins, and transportation.

“The government is meeting burial and medical costs, but the situation in this village is dire,” Kodera said.

“Some homes have been wiped clean, leaving children without parents. The pay bill will help support the families during the mourning period and after burial.”

He further stated that the government would cover the medical costs of all 26 survivors admitted to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

He stated that the committee will work with the families to ensure that the burial process goes well.

The funeral of the 26 people who perished in the horrific accident is set for Saturday, August 16, in Koguta village, Nyakach Sub-county, Kisumu.

According to Kodera, a requiem liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday at the Naki AIC Church in Nyakach, and the bodies will be transported to Koguta for a night vigil on Friday.

The funeral service will be held at Naki Primary School on Saturday, after which the heartbroken will bury their loved ones.

Kodera also stated that the committee had opened a pay bill number, 8010747, to help generate donations for the grieving families.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o consoled the bereaved in a speech delivered following the fatal occurrence.

He added that his office is working with the appropriate authorities to provide any necessary assistance to the families.

“On behalf of the County Government of Kisumu, we condole with the bereaved and offer our prayers to those who sustained injuries and continue to receive medical attention at different facilities,” Nyong’o stated.
