Migori Man Transforms Cave Into A Furnished House

In the tranquil village of Nyamilu, Migori County, a hidden world lurks beneath the overgrown grass and scattered bricks of a compound that looks to be abandoned.

A closer examination shows an uncommon and remarkable home: a cave carved and inhabited by Johnson Nyagana.

Nyagana has converted the underground space into a fully functional home, separating it into a living room, bedrooms, a kitchen, and even an upstairs sleeping area.

He describes how the setup works, mentioning that he occasionally changes rooms based on the weather.

“I sleep here, but when it rains, natoka kwa ile bedroom ingine. Hii ndio nyumba yangu. Niliigawanya mimi mwenyewe… hapa ni bedroom, pale ni jikoni,” He says.

His creativity goes beyond sheltering. Nyagana has dug a water reservoir that also functions as a sink, demonstrating his design and building skills.

The soil extracted from the cave was used to produce bricks, which were carefully exhibited throughout the compound in the hopes of attracting purchasers.

He sells them for a reasonable price, seeing the job as both a source of income and a legacy.

“This water sink I dug as a designer and a constructor for generations to come. I sell my bricks at 10 bob,” he adds.

Despite the obstacles, Nyagana continues to grow his underground abode.

Partially constructed constructions serve as reminders of his determination, while wooden rods and sticks form passageways going to various locations, including an upstairs section.

Nyagana has prepared his own burial next to that of his late wife, only 300 meters away from his home.

He describes the deed as one of love and foresight, stating that, whereas Jesus was put in a borrowed tomb, he chose to plan his last burial place ahead of time.

This unusual home, a blend of creativity, resilience, and personal philosophy, has become a testament to Nyagana’s resourcefulness — and his quiet peace with the life he has built underground.
