Police Teargas Locals Protesting Mysterious Disappearance Of MP Aspirant
Police forces fired tear gas at protesters in Maraba, Tinderet constituency, who were demanding answers over MP contender Shadrack Maritim’s inexplicable abduction.
Residents came to the streets with twigs and banners to demand answers, as Maritim has apparently been missing for just over a week, since October 27.
In the video footage, demonstrators can be seen blazing bonfires and blowing vuvuzelas.
They were also observed crouching on the ground, evidently dodging police authorities’ efforts to remove them from the streets.
According to a missing poster for the politician, he went for a morning run on Monday, October 27, about 6 a.m. and never returned.
He was reported missing in Cheplaskei, Uasin Gishu County, which is near Eldoret City.
According to accounts, he fled without his phone and has not communicated with his family or friends since his inexplicable absence.
He was last spotted wearing a gray track jacket, grey sneakers, and bluish track trousers.
However, his whereabouts have sparked speculation, with some political opponents claiming that the politician may have staged his abduction to gain sympathy.
Since his disappearance, his supporters have staged rallies, including one on Saturday, November 1, near the Maraba market centre.
The demonstration came just hours after Nandi County politicians, led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, visited the Langas Police Station in Eldoret to meet with security agents, seeking clarity and updates on the official investigation into the disappearance.
“Following the unfortunate disappearance of Shadrack Maritim (Captain) since Monday, today, together with my fellow leaders and family members, we visited Langas Police Station to follow up with the authorities on the progress of investigations,” Melly said after the visit.
