Tanzania Pleads With EU Parliament To Review Sanctions Stance

Tanzania’s foreign affairs minister, Mahmoud Kombo, has encouraged the European Parliament to evaluate the country’s stance on crucial issues as part of attempts to improve diplomatic relations.

His statements come after the European Parliament passed a resolution urging that Tanzania’s development funds be suspended due to disturbances during last month’s general elections.

The European Parliament’s decision to deny funds for Tanzania has prompted worry throughout the country.

The decision comes in response to charges of human rights violations in the disputed general election on October 29th.

The vote was carried on Thursday, potentially preventing the disbursement of 156 million euros (about Ksh.23.3 billion) under the 2025 action plan.

“Colleagues, if we stand for democracy, let us use the tools at our disposal,” said David McAllister, member of the European Parliament.

“All EU funds must be stopped immediately. All political prisoners must be released immediately.”

Tanzania’s foreign affairs minister, Mahmoud Kombo, held a meeting with diplomatic officials on Friday.

Kombo noted that the government is closely monitoring the European Parliament’s resolutions.

According to a press statement, Tanzania’s ambassador in Brussels has been directed to continue diplomatic engagements with EU institutions and other stakeholders in order to strengthen cooperation.

Tanzania’s government believes the EU should listen to the injured party.

Suluhu’s government has dismissed claims that the government will collapse due to the suspension of humanitarian funds as misleading.

Tanzania also accepts that the EU’s decision will have an impact on the entire system, including the private sector in Tanzania and across Europe.

Additionally, it will also affect international organizations, and ultimately the citizens who were meant to benefit from the planned projects.

For now, the Tanzanian government maintains that diplomatic engagement will continue, with a focus on protecting the interests of its citizens and strengthening ties with the European Union.
