Gunshots, Chaos After Police Teargas PCEA Church Attended By Gachagua
On Sunday, November 30, chaos broke out in Nairobi’s Kariobangi North Estate after competing political factions clashed outside the PCEA church, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had gone to worship.
The violence broke out after a group of youths, allegedly funded to disrupt the event, clashed with another section believed to be Gachagua supporters.
Minutes before noon, the two sides exchanged harsh words as tensions grew just meters from the church’s entrance.

As the situation worsened, police officers on high alert soon intervened and began dispersing the two groups that had blocked the whole road leading to the church’s premises.
During the event, armed officers launched tear gas canisters and fired rounds into the air in an attempt to disperse the tenacious crowds.

The police expelled the warring groups with force, and footage of the incident shows residents and bystanders fleeing for safety as the commotion affected businesses on the estate.
The church service was temporarily delayed for roughly five minutes as congregants battled to contain the vapors emerging from the used tear gas canisters.
Congregants were observed concealing their noses with handkerchiefs when Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Mejjadonk delivered his address.
While no significant injuries were reported in the mid-morning event, a large crowd gathered in the area as the church service continued uninterrupted.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Warui received 2,282 votes, surpassing second-place independent candidate Kimanzi John Katua, who received 1,956 votes.
The result gave the DCP a significant boost in the political arena, with Warui calling it a watershed moment not only for Kariobangi North but also for the DCP.
Gachagua had gone to attend a Thanksgiving service for Warui at the PCEA church when the violence broke out. However, the party has yet to publish a public comment about the incident.
