Senator Khalwale Removed as Senate Majority Whip

In a remarkable turn of events, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has formally lost his position as Senate Majority Whip.

Khalwale was removed from his position by his UDA party, and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed it after receiving communication from the ruling party.

“From the correspondence, the minutes indicate that a resolution was passed to remove the Senate Majority Whip Boni Khalwale in accordance with standing order 225,” Kingi stated during a Senate plenary session on Tuesday.

Khalwale’s ouster is effective immediately. He has been succeeded by Bungoma Senator David Wakoli Wafula.

“Standing order 228 provides that the speaker, upon receipt of the decision, shall verify the correspondence received and deliver a communication to the Senate within 3 sitting days,” Kingi said.

“I have verified the correspondence and can confirm the majority party has effected a change in the office of the Senate majority whip, and the new office holder with immediate effect is Senator David Wafula.”

Khalwale, who was present at the official announcement of his dismissal, wore a sorrowful expression in the Senate, apparently because he anticipated the outcome.

His departure effectively limits some of his responsibilities because, as Senate majority whip, he was in charge of enforcing party discipline and organizing the passage of critical legislation.

There were evidence that Khalwale’s relationship with the UDA was strained after his Nandi counterpart Samsom Cherargei openly threatened to ‘punish’ him for defying the party.

This came after the Kakamega Senator teamed up with opposition figures, including Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and DAP-Kenya head Eugene Wamalwa, to push for Seth Panyako.

Panyako ultimately lost the Malava by-election, with UDA candidate David Ndakwa winning the seat in a closely contested fight.

On Tuesday, Cherargei stated Khalwale would be among a long list of UDA and ODM rebels who would be promptly removed from their parliamentary positions and face disciplinary action from their organizations.

“There are our UDA MPs and those from the broad-based party ODM who supported our opponents in the by-elections,” Cherargei warned.

“Tomorrow, we will begin the process of removing them from the leadership of the parliament.”
