Governor’s Life Reportedly In Danger After Gunshots Near His Home

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has stated that his life is at risk after a live bullet impacted near his home in Kibiku village, Kabete, on Sunday afternoon.

The missile reportedly pierced a neighbor’s roof and landed in a children’s bedroom just 50 meters from the governor’s home, just after he returned from his farm.

Witnesses said the shot was purposefully directed at the governor’s home, prompting calls for the government to immediately strengthen his protection.

“The only person who could be targeted, according to the direction the bullet came from, is our governor. We request the government to beef up his security,” one resident said.

According to Wamatangi, the bullet looked to be shot from a heavy weapon, maybe an AK-47, approximately 200 meters away.

He encouraged police to look into the shooter, the location, and the motive.

“We need to know who shot, where he was, and the motive. The bullet is here, and it can be investigated,” he told journalists.

He stated that they were expecting results from ballistic experts because police had not yet produced an official report.

Margaret Njeri, the neighbour whose roof was apparently pierced, described the horrifying incident.

She initially thought a stone had damaged her house, but subsequently discovered a gunshot while cleaning.

On Monday, Njeri reported the incident to the Kibiku Police Station and contacted police from the governor’s mansion. Police investigations are ongoing.

The shooting incident comes after Wamatangi claimed he was suffering constant threats and political intimidation.

According to sources close to the governor, he has recently received threats from some Kiambu politicians, raising concerns as police investigate.

Wamatangi has often claimed that he was under constant threat from powerful cartels inside the county administration who had previously enriched themselves with public cash.

He also faced many impeachment threats from a faction of Kiambu Members of County Assembly (MCAs) over a variety of concerns, which he and his allies have repeatedly denounced as politically motivated and engineered by his opponents.

In April 2025, around 50 highly armed officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) invaded his private residence and county offices in an operation, questioning him about alleged corruption and procurement irregularities.

He later described the incident as “purely political intimidation” and a “witch-hunt”.

Wamatangi also consistently faced a challenging political environment, with a faction of local MPs working against his administration, which he viewed as part of a sustained effort to undermine his governance and influence.
