A group of UDA-affiliated youngsters in Mount Kenya have stated their support for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the region’s political representative, in a direct reaction to DCP head Rigathi Gachagua.

Addressing the press on Saturday in Embu, the young leaders encouraged Gachagua to “stop presenting himself” as the region’s ruler.

They stated that the results of the Mbeere North by-election were a strong indication of Mt. Kenya’s favored leadership.

They claimed that the recent Mbeere North by-election provided a definitive “referendum” on leadership.

“The people spoke loudly, and they chose Prof. Kithure Kindiki,” UDA youth league leader from the region, Peterson Merichi, stated.

The group cited the win of Leonard Wa Muthende, the candidate publicly supported by DP Kindiki, over Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, who was backed by Gachagua.

They termed the outcome as a “direct endorsement” and a conclusive message issued “vote by vote” on the region’s selected leader.

Merichi criticized Gachagua’s mobilisation efforts, claiming he was causing unnecessary divisiveness.

“Any individual posturing and presenting themselves as the Mt. Kenya kingpin without the people’s mandate is misleading the public,” he said.

Merichi emphasized that regional stability is dependent on honoring the electorate’s will.

Aside from regional rivalry, the young leaders emphasized UDA’s national performance in the recent mini-elections, where the party won 12 of 24 contested seats.

They presented it as a reaffirmation of the party’s control.

Praising Kindiki’s “decisive and unifying leadership,” Merichi said, “He has proven himself a stabiliser and the principal leader of the region. The people have endorsed him, and we stand firmly behind him.”

The league issued a strong demand for unity, encouraging leaders and residents to abandon “political factionalism.”

They especially named leaders elected on the UDA ticket who are now seen to be supporting opposing interests.

This public exchange heightens existing tension within the Mt. Kenya political scene, setting the stage for a protracted struggle for control of the vital voting bloc.
