“Don’t Fear When Oversighting Gov’t!” – Speaker Wetang’ula Tells MPs
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Members of Parliament to carry out their oversight responsibilities diligently.
He highlighted effective scrutiny of government acts as an important indicator of their contribution to Kenyans.
Wetang’ula addressed lawmakers at the end of a legislative retreat in Naivasha on Thursday.
The Speaker urged them to ensure the wise use of public resources and faithful implementation of government policies aimed at enhancing service delivery.
โMany of the issues tackled during this retreat touched on education, health, security, infrastructure and agriculture. I encourage you not to fear oversight of the Government,โ Wetangโula said.

He emphasized that President William Ruto has continuously supported parliamentary accountability, citing the administration’s facilitation of Cabinet Secretaries appearing before Parliament to answer MPs’ queries.
Wetang’ula quoted former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to advise MPs to stay focused on their legislative duty.
โYou will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks,โ he said.
He also asked lawmakers to continue serving their constituents with determination.
The Speaker emphasized the necessity of questioning Cabinet Secretaries thoroughly, addressing weaknesses where they exist, and recognizing areas where ministries are operating well as part of a balanced approach to government.
Echoing the Speaker, Majority Party Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah urged MPs to follow up on topics within their legislative mandate after the retreat.
โOversight should not end with this retreat. Members should avail themselves every Wednesday for meaningful oversight,โ Ichungwโah said.

He mentioned that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is set to appear before the House on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
He also stated that CS Murkomen will be expected to advise MPs on the situation of national security and the government’s preparedness for the next election period.
Ichungwโah also reminded lawmakers that all MPs have a constitutional mandate to conduct oversight and should not take offence when challenged to do so.
With the 13th Parliament entering its final phase, he stressed the urgency of addressing constituentsโ needs, including ensuring inclusivity in budget allocations.
