Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of South Sudan’s Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), is in Nairobi, Kenya, receiving medical care.
The Speaker’s Office verified this following extensive social media allegations that she fainted in her office and was promptly removed abroad.
The Speaker’s Office released an official statement on February 25 calling the circulating rumours inaccurate and misleading.

They highlighted that the Speaker’s visit to Nairobi was a planned medical trip as part of his usual health care.
“We wish to clarify that the Rt. Hon. Speaker is currently in Nairobi for a medical check-up. This is a standard health practice, not an emergency,” the statement read.
The Office highlighted that Speaker Nunu Kumba was in good health and in high spirits.
She is anticipated to resume her formal activities following the medical visit.
According to reports, the misinformation sparked broad public worry and fueled scepticism about the stability and effectiveness of South Sudan’s legislative leadership.
In South Sudan, the parliament is an important part of the 2018 peace agreement, which intends to end the civil war and restore confidence.
The Speaker’s Office warned that circulating unconfirmed information concerning national leaders’ health could weaken institutional trust and cause unneeded fear.

“Irresponsible reporting and politically charged insinuations not only mislead the public but also risk undermining confidence in national institutions,” they added.
The Office thanked the public for their concern and advised prudence and verification when sharing information concerning officials’ health.
This incident comes two weeks after the government disputed rumours that Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok had died while receiving treatment in Nairobi.
The government, through the Press Secretary in the Office of the Governor, Manath Gany Lual, issued an official statement dismissing the claims as false.
