“Hormuz Is Not Closed!” – Iran Tells Kenya Amidst Price Spike Concerns

The Iranian Embassy in Nairobi has denied that the Middle Eastern confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz will have an impact on domestic fuel costs.

In a statement issued on March 27, the Embassy unequivocally declared that narratives and reports alleging that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will have a detrimental ripple impact on Kenya are’simply untrue and propaganda’.

“In this regard, the Embassy categorically rejects false claims by some parties and biased media propaganda regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Such allegations are baseless and do not reflect the Islamic Republic of Iran’s actual position,” stated the Embassy.

The Iranian Embassy further noted that the country’s primary goal remains to facilitate lawful maritime commerce while using its fundamental right to self-defence under international law.

The Embassy further stated that the conveyers of the economic hardship propaganda and false narratives are perpetrated by its nemesis, the US and Israel, intended to discard the truth,  and that Kenya ought not to worry about any foreseeable fiscal difficulty.

“The publication of false news and manipulated narratives concerning the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impacts on life expenses in countries like Kenya are products of the US and the Israeli regime’s propaganda machinery and are aimed at distorting public opinion,” stated the Embassy.

The Embassy of Iran stressed that this is a fruitless attempt to shift responsibility from the culprits and aggressors against Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical pathway that contributes to a fifth, or 21 per cent, of the global oil supply.

With the conflict entering the 28-day period, Iran has maintained that it is only allowing “friendly nations” to pass through the route, with the directive announced on March 26.

This means that vessels belonging to countries such as China, Russia, Pakistan and Iraq are allowed, while those of the US and its allies, such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates (UAE), will be targeted in drone strikes and bombing campaigns.

According to the BBC and Reuters, several ships allied to Iran’s adversaries have already been hit and destroyed.

“In line with this longstanding commitment, the Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has not been suspended or closed and continues, subject to the measures adopted and the considerations arising from the current wartime situation,” stated the Embassy.

It added that, “Within the legal framework arising from the armed conflict, such assets shall be dealt with in accordance with the decisions and measures of the competent Iranian authorities.”

This comes as the Kenya-Iran relationship is under a litmus test.

The United States, through the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on March 24, commended President William Ruto for his public condemnation of Iranian attacks on neighbouring countries in the Middle East, following the escalation of conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the U.S.
