KDF On The Spot Over Shooting Range Stray Bullets, Residents Confirm Injuries
Uproar has gripped Entashat village in Kajiado County, as residents report rising incidents linked to stray bullets from a nearby Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) shooting range.
Locals say stray bullets have increasingly found their way into homes, with some residents reporting injuries and property damage. Others say they often collect bullets within their compounds.
The residents have petitioned the National Assembly, demanding urgent intervention and calling for the relocation of the shooting range or the implementation of strict safety measures to protect the community.
One resident recounted being struck and injured on the lower right side of his head while seated at home last Wednesday, April 22.
He said KDF officers responded and provided treatment after the incident.
“I felt an impact on my head and fell to the ground. When I touched the area, I found that it was a bullet that hit me,” he said.
“The KDF officers are the ones who treated me. It was not as bad as it could have been, but I am injured.”
Another resident also described an incident that occurred at his home.
“I was sweeping, then I heard a loud sound. I looked to find a bullet hole in my wall,” said Richard Makori.

Locals say such incidents have become a common occurrence, raising fears over their safety in the area.
Christine Ondimu, a resident, said the situation has disrupted construction work in the area, with labourers fleeing due to the frequent gunfire.
“All the workers who are here to help us construct our homes run away because of these gunshots,” she emphasised.
“We have workers who have been shot and some of them have been injured. Now we don’t know what to do.”

Before adding, “Even the noises coming from the shooting range are inhospitable. We are pleading and asking firmly because we cannot live in our houses in fear.”
Resident Samuel Saitoti accused authorities of failing to act on the complaints. He called for modernisation of the range to stop the use of live bullets that could harm civilians.
“When we talk to the officers, they still are not taking our concerns seriously or taking action to prevent stray bullets from their shooting range,” he said.
“We are treating these people as a very hostile neighbour, the reason being that they are not modernising their shooting range. They are shooting live bullets that can injure or kill.”
KDF has acknowledged receiving the complaints from residents and confirmed that investigations into the matter are underway.
