IG Kanja Makes Leadership Changes For GSU, Police Operations
The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has reshuffled top police commanders, naming Assistant Inspector General Johana Kiplangat Tonui as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit.
According to a private notice issued on June 10, the adjustments, which have been authorized by the National Police Service Board, will take effect immediately.
Tonui, who has been awarded the Head of State Commendation, will lead the formidable GSU after leaving the Kenya Police Service’s Directorate of Operations.
His predecessor at the GSU, AIG Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, does not quit the unit fully but takes on the job of Deputy Commandant of the GSU.

Nyongesa, who holds the Order of the Grand Warrior decoration, transitions into the deputy role, thus ensuring continuity within the GSU’s command structure.
Additionally, the third change sees AIG Paul Maingo Mumo take over as Director of the Internal Affairs Unit, a department that oversees accountability and conduct within the police service.
Mumo, decorated with the Moran of the Burning Spear honour, previously served in the Directorate of Quality Assurance within the Kenya Police Service.
On the basis of their new roles, AIG Tonui, as the newly appointed GSU Commandant, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the paramilitary unit.

He will coordinate high-risk security deployments, counter-terrorism responses, and the protection of critical government installations across Kenya.
AIG Nyongesa, on the other hand, now serving as Deputy Commandant of the GSU, will support the Commandant in managing unit logistics.
In addition to personnel welfare and operational planning, ensuring the GSU maintains its readiness and discipline at all times.
Likewise, AIG Mumo, as the head of the Internal Affairs Unit, will investigate complaints lodged against police officers, enforce professional conduct standards, and ensure accountability is upheld within the National Police Service ranks.

The changes in the police ranks come against the backdrop of the changes made by President William Ruto to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) leadership structure on June 5.
The changes saw Major General John Maiso Nkoimo appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army, replacing Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan, who retired.
Nkoimo previously served as General Officer Commanding Central Command.
Brigadier William Kamoiro was promoted to Major General and appointed General Officer Commanding Central Command.
Kamoiro filled the vacancy left by Nkoimo, while Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah was named Deputy Air Force Commander.
Brigadier Peter Kipketer Limo and Brigadier Dr Francis Njoroge Kuria were both elevated to Major General and appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Forces and Director of Medical Services, respectively, bolstering KDF’s senior leadership capacity.
